Position Overview
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in managing the accounting and financial operations of the construction company. This role is hands-on and responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance across multiple projects and entities. The Assistant Controller plays a key role in job costing, WIP reporting, and month-end close while partnering closely with project management and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with full-cycle accounting operations, including general ledger oversight, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and management reports
- Oversee job costing, WIP schedules, percent-complete accounting, and cost-to-complete analysis
- Review and support AIA billing, draw packages, and lender reporting
- Partner with project managers to monitor budgets, change orders, and project profitability
- Review accounts payable, payroll, and subcontractor cost allocations for accuracy
- Assist with cash management, forecasting, and weekly cash flow reporting
- Support audits, tax filings, insurance reporting, and compliance requirements
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff; review work and support team development
- Assist with system improvements, ERP utilization, and process enhancements
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction or project-based environments
- Strong understanding of construction accounting concepts, including WIP, job costing, retained earnings, retainage, and revenue recognition
- Experience working with construction ERPs (e.g., Sage, Intacct, Viewpoint, Procore, QuickBooks Enterprise)
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling)
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Proven ability to partner with operations and communicate financial information clearly
